Cranberry-Orange Pear + Apple Chutney {Paleo, GF, DF}

The perfect turkey accompaniment…or any white meat! This chutney takes cranberry sauce to the next level! Honey, fresh fruit + golden raisins help to sweeten up this Cranberry-Orange Pear + Apple Chutney with a bit of tang from the cranberries, orange + fresh ginger! Not only is this delicious, but it is also beautiful + your house will smell fabulous when you are making it! It’s the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit! Bonus…this chutney can be made a week ahead!

My mom and I have been making a version of this chutney from Cooking Light Magazine for years now! It always made Thanksgiving a little more special when we would make it. It used to be something that only she and I enjoyed but this year my husband even loved it! We had an early Thanksgiving, celebrating with my family + Jeff’s parents and we all enjoyed this chutney for days! It certainly helped to “snazzy-up” the leftovers we ate ALL weekend long!;).

The Cooking Light version calls for a lot of sugar + crystallized ginger. I lightened-up the sugar-load + made it paleo-friendly by using honey + fresh ginger. Cooking light’s version also called for lemon juice but I thought orange juice would go well with cranberries + a little orange zest. Apples, golden raisins, cinnamon, cloves and even the onion (which I always thought was a little strange but totally works here!) all meld perfectly together in this chutney!

This is the perfect thing to take to a holiday dinner! It would also be very pretty as gifts in pretty mason jars + would be delicious on chicken or pork! I love that you can make it ahead!

Whether you are hosting or a guest for the holidays this Cranberry-Orange Pear + Apple Chutney is the perfect way to make your holiday meal even more special! I love that it has become a tradition in our family and I hope it becomes one in yours as well!

I would love to know one of your favorite holiday meal traditions in the comments below!

Much Love, Alicia

Cranberry-Orange Pear + Apple Chutney {Paleo, GF, DF}

Course: condiment
Cuisine: dairy-free, gluten-free, paleo
Keyword: chutney, cranberries, cranberry chutney
Author: Alicia Raymond

Ingredients

  • 1 12 oz package fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup honey*
  • 1 cup water
  • scant 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 3-inch cinnamon sticks (approximately)
  • 1 1/2 cups smalled diced Bosc pear (about 1 large)
  • 1 heaping cup small diced Honey Crisp apple (about 1 sm.-med.)
  • 3/4 cup golden raisins
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 inch piece peeled fresh ginger (about 1 inch wide) grated on a micro-plain
  • 1 tsp orange zest (loosely packed)
  • 1 tbsp fresh squeezed orange juice

Instructions

  • Combine the first 6 ingredients in a large saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring until the honey dissolves.
  • Reduce heat to medium and cook for about 5 minutes (stirring frequently to prevent boiling over) until cranberries are breaking open.
  • Next, stir in pear, apple, raisins, onion, and ginger + orange zest.
  • Simmer for 20 minutes (stirring occasionally) until apples and pears are tender. Remove from the heat + stir in orange juice.
  • Cool to room temperature then discard the cinnamon sticks.
  • Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Can make up to a week ahead.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Recipe adapted from Cooking Light Magazine.
*When I made this last time with lemon juice it was a bit more sweet. I also think I added a heaping cup of honey. This time it was more of a scant cup. If you would like it a bit more sweet, add a little more honey. Mine was a little more on the tart side this time.

    Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any recommendations?
