My Favorite Natural Makeup Company + Why Ingredients Matter

Transitioning to natural makeup and giving up the makeup that you and know and love can be challenging but it is so worth it! It’s important to know not only what we are putting in our bodies but also “on” them. Ever since my start on this healthy living journey I have been a label reader! Omiana truly has some of the “cleanest” ingredients I have seen!

Note-I received some products in trade for this post. However, the opinions here are all my own and I would never recommend a product to you that I didn’t believe in. The links are not affiliated links. All photos are from Omiana.

I have been using Omiana since 2015! When reading the ingredients of other makeup brands and comparing them to Omiana there really is no comparison! They use organic, natural ingredients that are good for your skin without chemicals as much as possible or skin-irritating ingredients. They pride themselves in creating makeup for even the most sensitive skin types.

But you may be saying, “Is the makeup I’m using really that bad for me…I mean, it’s just going on my skin?”

Believe me…I used to think the same thing! However, on this healthy living journey of mine, I have learned a lot (enough to drive my husband crazy at least;)! The ingredients we are putting on our bodies are actually getting absorbed into our bloodstream. These common “drugstore” makeup ingredients contain chemicals that have potentially harmful side effects including… hormone toxicity, cancer, fertility issues, birth defects and so on.

These chemical-laded ingredients are not just sitting on our skin but are actually getting “in” our bodies. You may also be thinking…, “But I don’t use enough or there is not enough of it in the product to cause any harm”.

The average woman uses 12 products in her beauty routine. Now think of all those harmful ingredients when you add them up after daily use! That also doesn’t include all the other potentially harmful ingredients you may have in your life like your cleaning supplies. When you add this all up…this is a lot! Our bodies were built to handle a lot but we are asking our bodies to do way too much!! This is leading to potentially serious health problems!

Toxic ingredients to look out for in your products are Parabens, Phthalates, “Fragrance”, Toluene (toluene is often listed as benzene, methylbenzene, phenylmethane, and toluol), Triclosan + more.

I’m not saying you should go throw out all your old makeup and start fresh but I am saying it’s important to know what we put that what we put “on” our bodies matter just as much, or if not more, than what we are putting in them. Holistic care is something they taught us in nursing and this is also true to our own personal healthcare. It’s about looking at the whole picture of our lives. I love what Omiana says on their website…

At Omiana we look at and advocate that others look at one’s body holistically: Our bodies and visages are billboards telling the world how our inner body is functioning. If we have issues with our interiors, it’s going to show on the outside. We want you to feel as beautiful and capable as you are! That’s why we cater to various ingredient sensitivities:

One of my favorite products of Omiana’s is their Adaptive Concealing Cream: Dewy, Medium to Full Coverage – Without Mica & More. I have been using this stuff since 2016! It goes on smooth, really works, and doesn’t make me break-out or leave my skin oily. I love this stuff! I just want to give you a list of the ingredients in this product as an example…

Organic Castor Seed Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Candelilla Wax, Rice Bran Wax, Organic Cocoa Seed Butter, Organic Shea Butter Fruit, Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E from Sunflower), Organic Rosemary Leaf Extract, Titanium Dioxide, and Non-Nanoparticle Iron Oxides.

This one does contain Titanium Dioxide but they also have titanium dioxide-free makeup + mica-free makeup options.

I use the finishing powder as a mattifying powder for my oily skin and really helps to keep the oil down. I love the blush because it also helps keeps the oil down and doesn’t make me shiny. The shades are so light and natural. The shade I’m using right now and loving is Cheerful.

Omiana’s mission + products are not only great but they also have good customer service. They allow you to try the product and even if you used it and it just “didn’t work” you can send it back within 30 days for a full refund! They also have samples you can purchase. This makes buying and trying makeup online a lot easier…especially when you are just starting out in the natural makeup world.

They were also so sweet in trading a couple of products for me to try in exchange for this blog post. They said that they don’ t normally do this but since I’ve been a customer for long they would! The two products I wanted to try and they sent me were their Hydrating Mineral Lip & Cheek Tint in Rouge + Intense Coverage Matte Liquid Foundation – No Mica, Ultramarines, & More in Cashew.

I’ll be honest and say that I am not a liquid foundation girl. With my oily skin, I much prefer powders but since I’m getting older I notice I need more moisture on my skin. I have been on the hunt! Plus, my current foundation powder is the only makeup I use that is not chemical-free but am having such a hard time replacing it!

I loved the smell of Omiana’s liquid foundation and liked it at first but as the day went on I could just “feel” it too much on my oily skin and the color was just a little too dark on me. My mom has a little darker skin tone so I gave it to her to try and she liked it! She said it was creamy, went on smooth and blended well. The color was a little to light for her so she blends it with her other makeup. Makeup is such a personal thing, which is why you really have to give it a try for yourself to see!

As for the Lip and Cheek Tint, I had the same issue with putting on my cheeks…I just prefer powder. But I like the Rouge color for my lips. It’s a lovely soft rosy-pink color. It is a little drying so I still need to apply a moisturizer with it.

The last product that I purchased on my own and tired was Omiana’s Vegan Black Lengthening Mascara – No Mica, Titanium Dioxide, & More! I love the looks of this mascara on and gives some volume to my eyelashes. It does bleed some during the day. I plan on giving their Black Strong-Hold Mascara – No Titanium Dioxide, Mica, & More! a try and see if I like that one better.

I really wish I was in love with all their products because their ingredients are just SO good!! It’s hard to find a makeup company with ingredients as organic and good as Omiana’s, even compared to other non-toxic natural makeups. As much as I love this company and my go-to staples of theirs, I still am on the hunt for more natural makeup options that work for me. We are all so different and different products work better on some than others.

I still struggle between looking for “the best” and “good enough”. My philosophy has been and still is that if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin. But we can’t always be perfect and I can do my best to live this way but sometimes the cost just isn’t worth it or the benefit of using it is worth more than the cost.

I am learning, with the help of my husband:), that life is all about balance. We may not be perfect and some of the natural makeup I find that works for me may not have ingredients as great as Omiana’s, but if I am still doing my best to cut out the toxic chemicals and minimize my exposure then that is “better than good enough” to quote my smart husband. Even Omiana’s ingredients aren’t perfect but when you can find a product with ingredients this good that works for you…I say “job well done!”.

I am thankful for companies like Omiana that make beautiful natural makeup products that not only do their best to avoid toxic chemicals but are passionate about healthy ingredients that are good for your skin! I highly suggest that you give them a try!

Hopefully this inspires you to take a look at the back of your beauty products and really know what you are putting on your skin! If you are curious about the ingredients in your products you can use this database to do some research of your own.

To me, beauty is natural beauty. If you’re naturally yourself, you’re beautiful. -Young M.A

Something that is easier said than done. Being myself isn’t’ always easy for me. I have a lot of work to do in this area but with life is a journey!

Much Love, Alicia
